The Bakersfield College track and field team will be hosting their first meet of the year on Feb. 12.
Track and field coach Dave Frickel said he’s looking forward to the team being more diverse. “We just hope to see [the men and women’s] teams finish as high as possible.” Standout individuals include many freshmen athletes. Sophomore and top returnee Holly Raymon-Mosley finished seventh in the pole vault at last year’s state meet. Freshmen runners Ashley Cobert and Ashley Webber are expected to do well in sprint events. Emiley Leming and Melinda McGee, both freshmen, are top distance runners. Freshman Carey Tuuamalemalo is expected to top the girls in throwing.
Sophomore Cesar Mireles, who finished 50th out of 199 men at the state cross country championships last November, will be this season’s leading distance runner. Sophomore Tyrone Courtney is expected to be the top sprinter. Sophomore throwers Konrad Dahl and Adan Pino are leading the men.
Frickel is looking to the sophomores to show leadership this season. With the bulk of their meets being invitationals, with 20 to 30 colleges attending, the goal is to gain experience and see what develops.
Both teams will be at home on Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. The BC Relays, an annual event, will also be hosted by the team on April 25. All home meets are at Memorial Stadium.
