The Bakersfield College women’s volleyball team defeated Citrus three games to one with the match scores of 25-18, 22-25, 25-16, and 26-24.
According to head coach Carl Ferreira, the Renegades started out quickly in large part because the team was pumped up from the crowd and the support.
“Our players feel it. They generate energy from it, so it’s a big deal,” said Ferreira.
Chelsea Rose, 19, sophomore setter, gave her thoughts on the crowd, saying, “We try not to pay too much attention to what’s going on with the fans. We really need to stay focused in our game, but we noticed, and it’s good spirit. They do a great job of supporting us and cheering, and that helps. It definitely makes a big difference,” said Rose.
With a bevy of chants from the crowd and cheerleaders that included “Go B, C-ya” with every set up and spike and “shhh” after every point, the Renegades started out with a 5 point lead in game one and continued their success into game two where they started with a 10 point lead.
The lead shrunk with each Citrus serve and rally. The Renegades went down in game two but put together another run to start the third game leading by eight before Citrus was on the scoreboard.
The team closed out game three, and then started out game four down 11-1. After several service aces from LaPorsha Singh and a couple of rallies later, the Renegades had fought their way back into the game and then took the lead late to closeout Citrus.
According to Ferreira, that was a big moment for the team because most teams would have given that game away and gotten ready for the next one.
“We’ve been doing this all year, not panicking, not allowing high and lows. You just got to understand how to manage the game. Good things are going to happen, and bad things are going to happen, so don’t dwell on the mistakes for very long. It’s the next play that’s the most important.”
BC’s top scorer Reisa Fessler recorded 31 kills, 13 digs, five blocks and two service aces. Brookey Holmes added 16 digs, 15 kills and three blocks. Corissa Alvarez also added six kills, six digs and one service ace.
Previously, the Renegades also defeated Canyons and West L.A.
They beat Canyons three games to one with the match scores of 25-17, 25-19, 26-18, and 25-23. This counted as the team’s first Western State Conference win. The match against West LA went as follows: 25-10, 25-12, and 25-12. With that win, this gives the team two conference wins, and after the victory against Citrus, the team’s record stands at 10-5 (3-0).
The Renegades face L.A. Pierce and Santa Monica, which are both at home on Oct. 20 and 23.
