The Bakersfield College men’s and women’s track and field teams are getting ready to start the season and are hoping to have a productive year.
With several members that head coaches Dave Frickel and Pam Kelley say are athletes to look out for, the Renegades feel they are in good shape to make a good run at the top three of the Western State Conference.
Frickel has Robert Quintero, Conrad Dahl, Brandon Gooden, and Darien Moore as members he is expecting to do well.
As for Kelley, she is expecting good things from Dyneeca Adams, Chanel Reaves, Ashley Weber, Ashley Colbert and Chelsea Cassulo.
The Renegades’ first meet was at Antelope Valley College for an All Comers event on Jan. 30.
The team used this meet as a warm up for the season and only hopes to improve from this meet.
Frickel spoke about his comparison of last year’s team as compared to this year’s team.
“I think we’re much stronger in both the men’s and women’s program this year.
“We had a lot of freshmen last year and with this much experience coming back, we should have a real good shot at making the post season, Southern Cal pre-lims, finals and state meet,” said Frickel.
Kelley talked about what the team has done to improve from last season.
“We started a little bit earlier with competition which will get everybody going a little bit better and so we should see more improvement a lot earlier and throughout the season,” said Kelley.
Kelley went on to talk about how she expects the team to do for the rest of the upcoming year.
“We just want to move our players to the next level.
That’s the main goal, is to get our athletes into the next level of their lives,” said Kelley.
“And in order to do that, we have to go out here and just perform well.
We got off to a good start, so we will see how things go from here.”
Frickel was asked about his expectations of the team in the first couple of meets, and he talked about the first meets as a sort of warm up for the conference meets.
“The first couple of meets are real low-key, and we’re really not looking for any real good performances for about another month,” said Frickel.
“Some of them are in pretty good shape, some of them aren’t, so we’ll find out about ourselves real quickly.”
“If the kids perform well, then great,” continued Frickel. “We’re just hoping that at the end of February they start to round into shape. We should start to see the good performances around then.”
On Feb. 6 and 13, the teams travel to Northridge and to the Pomona Pitzer Feb. 20.
