Bakersfield College’s track and field team had great performance at the Western State Conference Finals on April 27, as it was able to qualify 25 athletes to the Southern California Prelims.
Ten of the 25 athletes for BC qualified in multiple events, including Bert Flores who qualified in the discus and shot put. Chris Schwartz also qualified in the 1,500 and 5,000. The BC women athletes that qualified were Serena Underwood, Danielle Tildahl, Tijera Dial, Elizabeth Sanchez, Natalie Fernandez, Serraya Hermosilla, Molly Fitch, Ensley Davis, Amanda Mosby, Amanda Smith and Blanca Perez. The other men athletes who qualified were Walter Hunt, Michael Norwood, Myren Moore, Davis Lostalout, Justin Evans, John Purcell, Triandous Hobson, Bevan Wemhoff and Eric Fernandez.
“They had a really good day and they were on top of their game,” said BC coach David Frickel. “We were impressed how many qualified and that they were able to qualify and have season bests at the same time. I was really proud how the kids performed at such a high level.”
He added that he thinks this is a good group with quality athletes that have had quality marks.
“I’m really happy how the men were able to finish third, but unfortunately, the women weren’t as lucky since they didn’t have the same depth,” he said. “I’m also happy about how we’ve done since most are freshmen.”
West L.A. scored 100 in the women’s events and took first. College of the Canyons and L.A. Valley tied for second with 94 while BC had 55 ending up in eighth. In the men’s events, behind first place West L.A. who had 127, was Canyons with 104 and BC finishing third with 94. West L.A. ended up being the WSC conference champs.
“I hope that we can perform at a high level at the Southern California Prelims and get a chance to compete in the finals the following week,” said Frickel. “All I want is for at least half of them to get a chance to advance and have a chance at state.”
The Southern California Prelims will be at San Diego Mesa on May 5, and the Southern California Finals will be at the same location the following week.
