Bakersfield College women’s soccer team tasted defeat against West L.A College with a score line of 2-0, in an otherwise BC-dominated game.
Early pressure ensued from BC, as they fired off multiple shots against the opposition with none reaching the back of the net. BC’s own Emily Vincent had a promising attempt after breaking away from the visitor’s defensive line, but unfortunately for the Renegades, resulted in a save.
BC continued to set a consistent pace against the competition which led to multiple shot attempts, however nothing concrete resulted from the many attempts. A few counter attacks were efficiently shut down by Mariah Myers-Caldarella and the rest of the Renegade defensive line.
Either team’s mission to light up the scoreboard proved to be ineffective, as the game remained scoreless at halftime.
An energetic tempo was set into motion by the Renegades to kick off the second half, with a clear possession and shot advantage. However, the ball evaded the back of the net for the home team.
During the 60th minute, L.A West’s Kennedy Gaston escaped from the BC defense to put the visitors up 1-0, and eventually 2-0 in the 74th minute, marking the final score line.
Late game drama appeared when a yellow card was handed out to L.A West’s Madeline Heredia during the 88th minute for failing to give any space during a free kick.
The final whistle blew, signaling the end of the game. Despite BC clearly outplaying their opponents, the game concluded in a 2-0 defeat to West L.A.
Coach Edgar Lenares reflected on the match stating, “We had 18 shots in the first half including 6 to 7 breakaways, … the other team gets two chances in the whole game and puts it away, that’s just the way the game goes.” However, he remains optimistic noting that they are still a young team and that they will “keep grinding and keep pushing.”
The BC women’s soccer team now has 4 wins, 6 losses, and 3 draws, with eight games left in the season, to show what they are made of.
