An event highlighting BC renegade athletes along with their coaches was held at Luigi’s Italian cuisine restaurant on Aug. 21. Many new coaches are starting this year’s BC athletics program, including women’s & men’s cross-country teams, men’s & women’s basketball, golf, baseball and track & field.
There is a new era for the cross-country team, with new head coach Cesar Míreles. The feeling for Míreles being a new coach states, “it feels great and it’s an honor to be.” Based on past performances, the team’s goal to achieve as a team this year is to “be better, to make girls represent BC well and beyond and for men 3rd at state, to have both teams on the podium.”
Being a coach comes with a delightful story, as Mireles said, “I love the sport and was surrounded by great coaches in my life & to be like my great coaches.” With a new coach comes a change to the sports program, which means a new direction. Mireles stated, “This is my fourth year with three years of experience assisting, based on well performed on past to adjust each year and get better, every year you learn something.”
Edgar Linares, the women’s soccer head coach, is overly excited for the season. Linares’ reason for becoming a coach falls into “growing up, I had many coaches who changed my point of life that contributed to youth, and shared life experiences.” Among the visions for the season, Linares said,” don’t lose back-to-back games.” Every coach has his expectations for their players, as he says they have, “to be the best group this year and excel both in the field and academically.”
Women’s soccer players Alexis Juarez, and Melanie Mendizabal spoke on their goals for their season, and both said, “win championships.” By doing what they need to do as a team, Juarez stated, “better communication, working together and doing better bonding.”
Jacob Perez, a second-year cross country runner shared his goals for his team. He hoped to “get second state team overall & make it to state and get on the podium.” As an individual athlete, Perez said, “confidence and an All-American in-state.”
Being a student-athlete is not easy and it requires a lot of dedication. Perez says it requires “balance, staying motivated out and on the field.”
All coaches & athletes are ready for what is to come, along with many of their upcoming goals for the season. The event was a hit and a preview of what’s to come.
