Bakersfield College’s volleyball team won all three matches as they played against the West LA Wildcats on Wednesday, Oct 2 at 6 p.m.
BC’s starters in this match were Chloe Comstock, Alexandra Watts, Kamryn Briggs, Lucely Parra, Carly Hayes, and Stevie Yursik.
West LA showed up to BC with six players. They scored the first point, but within 15 minutes into the first match, BC quickly caught up 8-2. BC took the first win scoring 25-9.
Intensity increased into the second match where freshman middle blocker, Watts #8, showed off her defensive skills. The match ended with another BC win at 25-9.
Sophomore Yursik #20, outside hitter, took a fall trying to keep the ball in, but unfortunately, it was an out. Yursik had her redemption by saving the next hit and scoring a point immediately after. Overall, she racked up 13 kills this game.
A player from West LA had an injury in the third match causing a forfeit. Due to the opposing team being unable to provide an alternate, the game ended early. The last recorded score for the third match was 11-7.
The players explained how their head coach, Carl Ferreira, talked about the importance of the mental game. “It was mental preparation for our next game,” said Yursik.
With the disadvantage West LA had, the women were encouraged to apply mental and physical skills in preparation for the next one. Watts said the game was a good opportunity to connect and grow closer as a connection is a good tool to win.
The teammates were ecstatic with their win. The following Friday they faced Santa Monica City College where they lost 3-2.
