Bakersfield College took an unfortunate loss at their home game against the Canyon Cougars with a final score of 2-1 on Oct. 8.
The game started strong 10 minutes into the first half with both teams eager to get a goal and a score on the board. One minute into the game midfielder Alexandra Gallardo (14) took a strong shot but ultimately missed.
There was a lot of back and forth throughout the beginning of the first. It led to a nail-biting experience making almost everyone in the stands frozen to see who could get control of the ball.
In the 17th minute, the first goal was made by Canyons Kiana Madera (7) making the score 1-0. The Cougars came close to scoring again midway through but luckily goalie Mercedes Ramirez (0) wouldn’t allow them and saved the ball effortlessly. This continued many times in the game from Ramirez.
Defender Kimberly Garay (13) seemed to have gotten hurt making her lay on her back in distress, while fellow teammates checked on her, but in an act of courage and readiness, she got up to continue to play.
A goal was made by BC’s Emily Vincent (12) making the game 1-1 with 14 minutes left of the first half. After some time of the game still being a tie, the first half had concluded.
The sun was out, and the heat was really starting to blaze off of the field by the time the second half was beginning to start.
The second half was like the first but with different triumphs and struggles from both teams. Many shots were taken from BC and the Cougars, but nothing was able to make it inside the goals for at least almost the entirety of the second. It wasn’t until Sofia Soler (14) on the Canyons made the last goal that the game had ended with a final score of 2-1.
Fortunately, being halfway through the season the Renegades will continue to thrive winning or losing. The team will make their way to a couple of away games and then back home for their game against Citrus College on Oct.18.
