Bakersfield College gives a chance to hear about an opportunity provided by Kern Medical. Dr. Goldis, a chief medical officer who oversees all department chairs within Kern Medical, spoke about his program called the A-team.
This opportunity gives those pursuing the medical field a way to get involved and be able to work in a hospital setting alongside like-minded individuals. Dr. Goldis selects individuals through an interview process, of those who are post-medical grad students and pre-med students. He says while going through the interview he looks for a “diamond in the rough”. He looks for personality within these students if they present themselves with high energy, articulated and good listeners. He also favors qualities from those who are calm and able to handle stress.
These personality traits are the type of student Dr. Goldis likes to be selected for the “A-team” each year. The reason he created the A-team was to get students networking opportunities with faculty, allow for leadership development and provide professional development. The A-team members work directly with physician leadership giving them hands-on experience in the medical field. It is also a paid program through Kern Medical with a time span of a year.
Every year new students are selected for the upcoming A-team. This opportunity is beneficial to students who are looking to pursue a career in the medical field. It gives those students a higher chance of being hired for a position at Kern Medical hospital . It also allows for students to have this work experience under their resume when this program is completed.
Since the medical field is competitive and those looking into medical school, the A-team is a way to show the experience acquired through it. This opportunity is beneficial to those who want to gain knowledge within the field through a hands-on approach.
