Bakersfield College returned to Memorial Stadium, hosting Antelope Valley College (AVC) on Sept. 28 for “Educator Night,” securing a dominating win over AVC with a final score of 56-7.
After falling to Golden West in week one, BC handled business on the road against the Long Beach Vikings with a win and final score of 28-10. Following that game they had a 65-0 shutout against San Bernardino Valley college.
On the opening drive, BC successfully stopped the AVC offense with a tackle for loss and a two-yard rush that forced a punt to be made. Mekhi Smith, an effective offensive player returned the ball to AVC’s 39-yard line. QB Vincent Igoa wasted no time on the field and fired off a lob pass to a wide-open Jacoby Pointer for 28 yards.
AVC responded with a 2-yard rushing touchdown putting the score at 7-7. Late in the 1st quarter, Igoa hands off a 10-yard rushing touchdown to Running back, David Smith to retake the lead.
Going into the 2nd quarter, BC had yet another defensive stop, forcing AVC to punt the ball again. Ayden Moreno threw his hands up for a block and Jalen Hankins recovered the ball on the ground. Igoa, showing great pocket presence, threw a deep ball to Mekhi Smith for 36-yards.
BC’s dominating defense forced yet another stop. Smith received a punt and cinematically returned the punt for a 52-yard touchdown.
Returning from the halftime, BC took the field with a score of 28-7. BC’s offense showed no signs of stopping with a 1-yard rushing touchdown from Jalen Hankins and a 14-yard rushing touchdown from Ja’Daniels Nettles.
Being up 42-0 into the 4th quarter, BC threw in 2nd team players and continued to dominate AVC’s offense and defense. With receiver Devon Sundgren’s one-hand snag 31-yard touchdown and Nettles bulldozing his way to the endzone, BC scored a touchdown of 1-yard.
“I feel great going into this next game, confidence is at an all time high. Offense is starting to click, and we are just starting to gel as an offense; and it’s all coming together,” said Igoa.
BC is set to play on the road vs. El Camino on Oct. 5.
