Maria Lopez, who is part of the United Farm Workers (UFW) Foundation and campus lead for Bakersfield College and Antelope Valley College, conducted the Immigration Forum on Thursday, Jan 23 via zoom. The UFW Foundation made sure to cover the changes that may occur due to the new administration, what to expect, and how to properly prepare.
The following topics were discussed: Post-election recommendations, State of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Advanced Parole, Immigration and Customs Enforcements (ICE) enforcement alerts, Know Your Rights (KYR) in case of ICE activity, family preparedness plan, how to prepare now, and how to get involved.
For DACA recipients: if your DACA is set to expire by April 2025, it is recommended to renew now. Currently, initial DACA applications are being accepted but not processed. Due to the new presidential term, UFW Foundation has stopped processing Advance Parole applications. Lopez mentioned that they “don’t want any of [their] students to run the risk being stuck abroad”.
Remember that there are only two ways ICE can enter your home, with a valid warrant (signed by a judge) or with your permission. They stated, if they do end up at your home, do not open the door, ask for identification, and ask to see a valid warrant. As they stated, make sure it is only signed by a judge and not an ICE Official or anyone else. Most importantly, you have the right to remain silent.
An ICE encounter is much different from a criminal encounter. Therefore, they are not required to provide an attorney for you. They suggested to be prepared ahead of time.
It is important to know and remember your rights (everyone has rights regardless of your immigration status) and use them in your favor, if needed.
